    Systemic physiology augmented functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a powerful approach to study the embodied human brain.

    In this Outlook paper, we explain why an accurate physiological interpretation of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging signals is facilitated when systemic physiological activity (e.g., cardiorespiratory and autonomic activity) is measured simultaneously by employing systemic physiology augmented functional near-infrared spectroscopy (SPA-fNIRS). The rationale for SPA-fNIRS is twofold: (i) SPA-fNIRS enables a more complete interpretation and understanding of the fNIRS signals measured at the head since they contain components originating from neurovascular coupling and from systemic physiological sources. The systemic physiology signals measured with SPA-fNIRS can be used for regressing out physiological confounding components in fNIRS signals. Misinterpretations can thus be minimized. (ii) SPA-fNIRS enables to study the embodied brain by linking the brain with the physiological state of the entire body, allowing novel insights into their complex interplay. We envisage the SPA-fNIRS approach will become increasingly important in the future

    Contingent Valuation of Mining Land Reclamation in East Germany

    Large parts of East German landscapes are formed by lignite mining activities. The mining pits destroy vast areas of the existing cultural landscapes. These areas have to be made re-accessible to society through extensive reclamation projects after mining has been finished. For an appraisal of the social benefits that need to be compared to the costs of these projects the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is the method of choice. The CVM measures the willingness to pay of households for such a project. This paper reports the findings of a Con-tingent Valuation study assessing the social utility created by a reclamation project north of the city of Cottbus in Brandenburg, Germany. The goal of the study is threefold. Firstly, the affected population's aggregate willingness to pay for the planned reclamation project is cal-culated; it amounts to 2.7 mil. Euro per year. Secondly, the determinants of this willingness to pay are analyzed. Apart from the expected positive impact of income on willingness to pay we find that it is also influenced by people's recreational activities, their general attitudes to-wards public spending and by their concerns about the economic situation. Thirdly, the study explores methodological specifics of an application of the CVM to Germany, especially in East Germany, by focusing on the appropriate design of the willingness to pay question which is an important feature still controversially discussed in the literature.contingent valuation;

    Homeopathic Preparations of Quartz, Sulfur and Copper Sulfate Assessed by UV-Spectroscopy

    Homeopathic preparations are used in homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine. Although there is evidence of effectiveness in several clinical studies, including double-blinded randomized controlled trials, their nature and mode of action could not be explained with current scientific approaches yet. Several physical methods have already been applied to investigate homeopathic preparations but it is yet unclear which methods are best suited to identify characteristic physicochemical properties of homeopathic preparations. The aim of this study was to investigate homeopathic preparations with UV-spectroscopy. In a blinded, randomized, controlled experiment homeopathic preparations of copper sulfate (CuSO(4); 11c-30c), quartz (SiO(2); 10c-30c, i.e., centesimal dilution steps) and sulfur (S; 11×-30×, i.e., decimal dilution steps) and controls (one-time succussed diluent) were investigated using UV-spectroscopy and tested for contamination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The UV transmission for homeopathic preparations of CuSO(4) preparations was significantly lower than in controls. The transmission seemed to be also lower for both SiO(2) and S, but not significant. The mean effect size (95% confidence interval) was similar for the homeopathic preparations: CuSO(4) (pooled data) 0.0544% (0.0260-0.0827%), SiO(2) 0.0323% (-0.0064% to 0.0710%) and S 0.0281% (-0.0520% to 0.1082%). UV transmission values of homeopathic preparations had a significantly higher variability compared to controls. In none of the samples the concentration of any element analyzed by ICP-MS exceeded 100 ppb. Lower transmission of UV light may indicate that homeopathic preparations are less structured or more dynamic than their succussed pure solvent

    In our previous investigations using systemic physiology augmented functional near-infrared spectroscopy (SPA-fNIRS) neuroimaging, we found larger variability between subjects in changes of cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation induced by an intricate experimental paradigm involving colored light exposure and a cognitive task. We aimed to investigate the role the activity of the systemic physiology has on individual variations in the fNIRS data. Thirty-two healthy subjects (17 female, 15 male and age: 25.5 ± 4.3 years) were exposed to blue and red light for 9 min (colored light exposure, CLE) while performing a verbal fluency task (VFT). We found that (i), at the group level, the visual cortex showed a stronger deoxyhemoglobin concentration response during blue light exposure than during red light exposure, and (ii) this relationship was influenced by individually different baseline blood pressure values. Furthermore, we found other correlations between changes in fNIRS signals and changes in systemic physiology. Our study demonstrates the usefulness and necessity of the SPA-fNIRS approach to gain insights into the individual variability of hemodynamic responses measured with fNIRS, especially in the case of an intricate experimental paradigm (i.e., CLE-VFT) as used in our study

    Usage of complementary medicine across Switzerland. Results of the Swiss Health Survey 2007

    QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: This study investigated the use among the Swiss adult population and regional dissemination of various methods of complementary medicine (CM) provided by physicians or therapists in Switzerland. METHODS: Data of the Swiss Health Survey 2007 were used, which comprised a telephone interview followed by a written questionnaire (18,760 and 14,432 respondents, respectively) and included questions about people's state of health, health insurance and usage of health services. Users and non-users of CM were compared using logistic regression models. RESULTS: The most popular CM methods were homeopathy, osteopathy, acupuncture and shiatsu/foot reflexology. 30.5% of women and 15.2% of men used at least one CM method in the 12 months preceding the survey. Lake Geneva region and central Switzerland had more CM users than the other regions. Women, people between 25 and 64 years of age and people with higher levels of education were more likely to use CM. 53.5% of the adult population had a supplemental health insurance for CM treatments. 32.9% of people with such an insurance used CM during the 12 months preceding the survey, and so did 12.0% of people without additional insurance. CONCLUSIONS: Almost one fourth of the Swiss adult population had used CM within the past 12 months. User profiles were comparable to those in other countries. Despite a generally lower self-perceived health status, elderly people were less likely to use CM

    The main moral motive for Tugendhat’s contractualist approach is the desire to be recognized as a member of the contractual community. But this reason can not justify the prohibition of cruelty to animals. With regard to this problem, Tugendhat fluctuates between the adoption of a second motive, compassion, and the externalization of the attitude toward animals and nature as a whole to mysticism. This article attempts to solve this problem by explaining the human-animal relationship and its ethical implications. It is argued that morality generally refers to the consideration of the welfare of beings who are capable of suffering. Since the welfare of these individuals has different dimensions and our relationships with them also have different types, so the moral action is based on different reasons, without having to assume a tension between incompatible motives.Para Tugendhat, el principal motivo moral de su enfoque contractualista es el deseo de ser reconocido como miembro de la comunidad contractual. Entre otras cosas, este motivo no puede justificar la prohibición de la crueldad con los animales. Con respecto a este problema, Tugendhat fluctúa entre la adopción de un segundo motivo, la compasión, y la externalización de la actitud hacia los animales y la naturaleza en su conjunto al misticismo. El presente artículo intenta resolver este problema explicando la relación humano-animal y elaborando sus implicaciones éticas. Se argumenta que la moralidad se refiere generalmente a la consideración del bienestar de los seres que son capaces de sufrir. Puesto que el bienestar de estos individuos tiene diferentes dimensiones y nuestras relaciones con ellos también tienen diferentes tipos, de la misma manera la acción moral se basa en diferentes motivos, sin que tengamos que asumir una tensión entre motivos incompatibles

    Phytotherapy in paediatric skin disorders- a systematic literature review.

    OBJECTIVES Although skin disorders in children and adolescents are increasingly treated with phytotherapies in practice, there are very few studies investigating this topic, and no systematic review exists that summarizes the current state of research. This review examines which herbal medicines show to be effective to treat atopic dermatitis, diaper dermatitis, and skin lesions or wounds. METHODS Clinical studies were searched according to PRISMA-guidelines in the medical databases of PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL and summarised in a systematic review. RESULTS Among the 429 articles screened, 17 studies with a total of 2358 participants were identified that suited our inclusion criteria. Thereof seven studies each on the treatment of atopic dermatitis and skin lesions or wounds and three on diaper dermatitis. The phytotherapeutics investigated were based on the following herbs: Evening primrose, blackcurrant, polypodium leucotomos, calendula, aloe vera, chamomile, comfrey, hamamelis, olive, hypericum, neem, white oak, and myrrh. They have mainly been analysed in randomized controlled trials, but also in (long-term) observational studies, prospective trials and case series. CONCLUSIONS Based on the application of the Jadad score, eight out of 17 of the studies examined were of low quality. Yet we found some indication that evening primrose oil may be effective for treating atopic dermatitis in children, while comfrey appears to have a positive effect on wound healing. Interestingly, none of the studies found positive effects for treating skin disorders with aloe vera or chamomile

    Detectability of low-oxygenated regions in human muscle tissue using near-infrared spectroscopy and phantom models

    The present work aims to describe the detectability limits of hypoxic regions in human muscle under moderate thicknesses of adipose tissue to serve as a groundwork for the development of a wearable device to prevent pressure injuries. The optimal source-detector distances, detection limits, and the spatial resolution of hypoxic volumes in the human muscle are calculated using finite element method-based computer simulations conducted on 3-layer tissue models. Silicone phantoms matching the simulation geometries were manufactured, and their measurement results were compared to the simulations. The simulations showed good agreement with the performed experiments. Our results show detectability of hypoxic volumes under adipose tissue thicknesses of up to 1.5 cm. The maximum tissue depth, at which hypoxic volumes could be detected was 2.8 cm. The smallest detectable hypoxic volume in our study was 1.2 cm3. We thus show the detectability of hypoxic volumes in sizes consistent with those of early-stage pressure injury formation and, consequently, the feasibility of a device to prevent pressure injuries
